B. The Mainland-Island Model

acrylic on canvas
60cm x 60cm
Iain White, 2009

In this mainland-island model long term metap0pulation persistence is assured by ONE or a very FEW [mainland] populations. Smaller nearby 'island' populations are vulnerable to periodic extinction. These can be recolonised from the large 'mainland' population but have no reciprocal effect on it because of their small size.

This varient is closely linked to the broader body of theory which can be grouped under the heading ISLAND BIOGEOGRAPHY

Again the painting follows the same visual conventio
