The World of the Bomb Site

For the remainder of the war and for a long time afterwards the bomb sites and derelict shells of homes and factories were the play grounds for the wartime generation of kids. We built forts and castles out of the wealth of bricks and rubble and played out our own heroic wartime deeds in make believe games. We constructed go carts from scavenged timber and old pram wheels which, with the addition of a few cardboard boxes or wooden crates became tanks and armoured cars. At other tines these bomb sites became football pitches, or as here, cricket grounds.
