Before the war Jordan Well and Earl Street beyond it were thriving shopping streets with rows of independent retail premises. Remarkably most of these shops survived the bombing though often severely damaged. Nonetheless, as part of the postwar redevelopment of the city centre they were demolished to make way for Coventry University buildings and the Herbert Museum and Art Gallery.
